What could be described as “Bro Felix Obuah’s Fever” has gripped political inclined Rivers people.
The prospect of his becoming governor of Rivers State in 2023 has created euphoria that has enveloped the electorate.
Everywhere you go in Rivers State, Bro. Felix Obuah’s name is on the lips of the people who believed wholeheartedly that he is naturally endowed to become governor of the oil rich state.
This reporter went to town to sound out opinion on Obuah’s governorship ambition and discovered that his popularity cut across party lines. Both members of the PDP and APC seem to like him and would want the former Rivers PDP chairman to become governor.
Why is Obuah so popular among the people? First is his philanthropy. Eighty percent of the respondents appreciated his philanthropy. They said he is full of the milk of human kindness, that he gives without reservation. From what they said it did appear that they had benefitted from his generosity, or those they knew had gotten a share of his largess. Go Round, they chorused, has been spreading his hard-earned money around and using it to help the less privileged.
It’s not necessary at this point to mention names, but it is instructive to feature Omoku Market Women who while canvassing support for the governorship aspiration of Hon Felix Obuah recently, described the PDP governorship hopeful as a shining light to the masses. They had recounted the financial and other help Obuah had offered them which had enabled them to continue to be in business and stressed that he should be in Government House where he would use Rivers resources to uplift the status of the citizens.
Another aspect of Obuah that Rivers people are never tired of speaking about is his political and administrative ingenuity. The respondents were baffled that Obuah held PDP intact for eight years as chairman, stressing that under his chairmanship His Excellency Gov Wike was returned twice as governor of Rivers State. They described the feat as political achievement of immeasurable proportion.
Now, as the PDP Governorship Primaries come up on Wednesday May 25 and with the array of heavy weight aspirants such as; Dr Abiye Sekibo, Dr Tammy Danagogo, Rt. Hon. Austin Opara, Senator Thompson Sekibo, Senator Lee Maeba, Hon. Sim Fubura, Engr. Tele Ikuru, Hon. Kamalu and others the PDP is parading, and who are seeking the ticket of the party against next year’s election, Obuah based on these people’s verdict, stands shoulder above them.
It is believed that Obuah’s popularity among the Rivers electorate is what the delegates would put into consideration in voting for him during the primaries and returning him as the PDP Governorship flagbearer for the 2023 general elections.
