Flood Engulfs Parts Of Port-Harcourt As Result Of Heavy Rain

Most parts of Port-Harcourt were flooded as result of heavy rain which fell from Thursday through Friday September 2 to 3.

Parts of Okilton by NTA-Mgbuoba Road were flooded as well as parts of Ada George and Ikwerre Roads where traffic was also affected.

The heavy flood engulfed houses in Okilton and residents were forced to leave their homes as their rooms were submerged in water.

Some shops around the area could not open for business because of the flood.

In some places flood water was up to window level sending residents packing and looking for shelter elsewhere.

Some residents who spoke but did not want their names in print lamented over the flooding which had occurred in previous years.

One resident said that he would move out of the area before the next flood season while others also said that nothing would stop them from moving out of the area.

The flood, they said, had damaged household items including electronics and had thoroughly drenched household mattresses as some residents were not home at time of the rain.

One resident said: “Nothing would stop me from moving. I can’t play with flood. See the amount of water and see how everything has been disrupted because of the heavy flood and see how I’ve to look for somewhere to sleep because my apartment is completely flooded”.

Another resident said: “No matter the situation I’d move out of here and even if what I can afford is small apartment I would rather leave than stay and experience flooding again”.

The stretch of road by the College of Health Science and Management Technology was also heavily flooded as other parts of the state capital.

The heavy flood affected traffic and movement of people and as rain fell people sought shelter where they could from the rain.

Businesses were generally affected in most parts of the metropolis and with the continuing rain pedestrians had sought shelter in umbrella.

Rivers State is prone to flooding.

Few weeks before the rain local councils were asked to prepare for flooding.

The parts affected in the flooding were in Obio/Akpor and Port-Harcourt City Local Government Areas as parts of Old Government Reservation Area (GRA) were also reportedly affected.

Residents affected by the flooding were forced to stay away from home for period of up to three days in order for flood waters to come down.
