Late Prof. Nimi Briggs Goes Home Saturday
The body of the late Emeritus Prof. Nimi Briggs, former Vice Chancellor of University of Port Harcourt who died in the early hours of Easter Monday, 2023, aged 79 years, will be committed to mother earth on Saturday, May 20, 2023.
A statement from the family of the late academic said his body will be interred in his home town, Abonnema in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area.
Until his death, the late Briggs was the 5th Vice Chancellor of University of Port-Harcourt, Pro-Chancellor of Federal University, Abakaliki, Bayelsa Medical University, Yenagoa and Chairman, Committee of Pro Chancellors of Nigerian Universities.
Prof. Briggs had his early education at Nyemoni Grammar School, Abonnema and Baptist High School, Port Harcourt. Later, he enrolled at Government College, Umuahia, where he completed his secondary education.
In June 1969, he received his bachelor’s degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Lagos.
He later bagged double postgraduate/professional degrees from the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists, London, 1972- 1975, and the University of Lagos, 1975 -1980.
Prof. Nimi Briggs served as the Vice-Chancellor of University of Port Harcourt twice. First, as Acting Vice-Chancellor from 1995 to 1996 before he was appointed again in 2000 serving until 2005.
He is the former Chairman Committee of Vice Chancellors of Nigerian Universities and the Chairman of the Board of the National Hospital.
Between 2007 and 2008, he was appointed Chairman of the Rivers State Economic Advisory Council and the Rivers State Community Foundation as well as, Director of Centre for Health and Development, University of Port Harcourt.
