…As Lawmaker Calls For Improved Funding
Former lawmaker who represented Port Harcourt constituency 1 in the Rivers State House of Assembly, Hon Victoria Nyeche has called for increase of the funds released by the State Government to the ministry of social welfare and rehabilitation so as to adequately cater for the less privileged in the society.
She made the call while receiving the Golden Education Support Award from the Rugged Steps Foundation For African Youth Development.
Hon Nyeche who was the chairman House Committee on Women Affairs also called on parents and relevant stake holders to increase education and sensitization toward minimizing the abuse on the girl child.
“The ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation is one of the most poorly funded ministries by the government because we think that welfare is something that we talk about and not something that we do, she pointed out “.
Stressing on the need to do more in terms of charity, she noted that a trip to the home for the elderly and home for the persons living with disability, will affirm that the ministry needs more funds.
She further regretted that those homes depend on goodwill to survive which according to her should not be so and urged government to do more than they are doing.
“We need to do more for the Children’s home, we need to create more awareness and more importantly we need to put in more funding” she insisted.
Earlier, director of the group, Kalada Oko Jaja had in his address said that the award was neccessitated by the need to reward her good works.
