Hon. Chinyere Emmanuel Igwe, member representing Port Harcourt Federal Constituency II in the House of Representative with his supporters rolled out the drums for a thanksgiving service at St. Thomas Anglican Church Diobu, Port Harcourt over the weekend.
According to him in a chat with newsmen, “the celebration is to return thanks to God for seeing us through at the general election and the successful inauguration of the 9th Assembly at Abuja.
“We thank God for the opportunity given us to serve our people, we shall not disappoint them”.
On what the people would be expecting from him, Hon Igwe said very soon he will unfold his legislative agenda which is sure to benefit everybody.
He however disclosed that Rivers people should expect more ideas in governance and more empowerment coming their way, adding that he will not betray the confidence repose in him.
“We shall look at the relevant clauses to be able to amend areas of the existing laws that need amendment in the overall interest of Nigerians”, he said.
He promised that the members shall work in synergy to ensure that their supporters are not disappointed.
At the reception ground in his Eagle Island resident, party faithful, family members and well-wishers trouped out in their numbers to felicitate with the honourable member.
Prominent among them were his colleagues at the green chambers including the honourable member representing Oyigbo/Tai/Eleme federal constituency, Hon Chisom Promise Dike.
In his remarks at the sideline of the occasion, Hon. Dike described the celebrant as a grassroot politician who knows his onions, adding that he is sure the lawmakers from Rivers State will pool their resources together to protect Rivers State interest.
The lawmaker also disclosed that he was in the state for a dual purpose, one to felicitate with his colleagues and again as a committee member raised for a fact finding team on the Kom-Kom oil explosion having tabled the issue on the floor of the hallowed chambers.
Hon. Dike made it clear that the incidence which claimed over 50 lives was indeed an act of negligence on the part of the companies because most of the pipelines are over two decades old without maintenance.
He stated that his ad-hoc committee will work in synergy with the senate to push for the compensation of his constituents who innocently lost their lives in the unfortunate inferno.
The amiable lawmaker disclosed further that though some of the victims lost their lives for scooping the spilled oil, that it does not explained the reason for the negligence of the host communities by the operatives.
He however used the opportunity to advise his people to resist the urge to go closer to an oil spillage for whatever reason, adding that the poverty in the land should not lead them into harming themselves unnecessarily bring shame to their family or loosing their lives.
