Labour Party Urges Wike To Reconstitute Cabinet

The Labour Party of Nigeria (LPN) which pride itself as the major opposition political party in Rivers State, has urged the state governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike to as a matter of urgency reconstitute his cabinet for accountability and enhancement of good governance.

Briefing the press in Port Harcourt on Monday, the Labour Party Chairman, Prince Favour Reuben said that for the state governor to be running a one-man show of governance after four (4) months of assuming office for his second term is unacceptable to the people of Rivers State.

According to him, “It is becoming worrisome that after four (four) months of swearing-in of the State governor, Barr Nyesom Wike, he has refused to properly constitute the executive arm of the government, this must be condemned and we must all rise to demand for good governance and dividends of democracy” he stated.

The Labour Party also urged the Rivers State House of Assembly to live up to its responsibility of checkmating the executives as well as its over sight function on the local Government Chairmen to ensure that they live up to their responsibility of developing their local areas.

Prince Favour further urged the governor to concentrate effort, initiate and execute capital projects to justify the huge financial resources accruing to the state.

“The governor should as a matter of urgency revisit the Greater Port Harcourt City project and indeed decongest the state of the one-city state status”.

He suggested that the state government can consider relocating some of its Parastatals and Ministries to other local government areas with a view of developing the area and decongesting the Port Harcourt and Obio/Akpor local government areas.

Prince Favour made it clear that without the proper constitution of the cabinet, the state cannot move forward, adding that men and women with capacity abounds in the state if those used in the first tenure are no longer acceptable. He made it clear that their decision to speak out at this point in time was as a matter of expediency.

The chairman disclosed that though the governor promised all inclusive government to the opposition parties, the Labour Party reason for pulling out of its matter against the Peoples Democratic Party in court was purely in the interest of Rivers State hence their action.

“Labour party believes in good governance and so expects good governance in this administration. We did not pull out of court based on any condition whatever.”

The major opposition party also condemned in its entirety what the governor is celebrating as his first 100 days in office achievements.

“As far as we are concerned, what the governor considers as his achievements is a carryover of his first tenure in office projects, there is nothing he initiated and completed within this period under review.”

On why he could not pass his views through the body of opposition political parties-IPAC, Prince Favour said though Labour Party of Nigeria is a member of IPAC, it has no driving force to make decision for the association; but we are worried on the lack of capital projects by this administration.
