Justice Nyesom Wike Advocates Promotion Of Policies Against Ozone Layer Depletion
The wife of the Executive Governor of Rivers State, Justice Eberechi Suzzette Nyesom Wike, says the most important thing to do in order to make the planet a safer place to live is to promote policies or laws against ozone layer depletion. This is part of her message to commemorate this year’s International Day For The Preservation Of The Ozone Layer.
She observed that buying and using recycled products, saving energy by switching off our electrical appliances like air conditioner, bulbs, when not in use, among other small but significant lifestyle changes, can do a lot in combating ozone layer depletion.
“The importance of the ozone layer to the existence of life on earth cannot be over emphasized. This is because the ozone layer acts like a sunscreen by absorbing the harmful Ultra Violet (UV) radiation from the sun, thereby preserving life on the planet”, the message read in part.
The first Lady of Rivers State expressed worry that depletion of this ozone layer largely occurs as a result of numerous man made activities such as gas flaring, uncontrolled logging or deforestation, bush burning, amongst many others.
Justice Eberechi Nyesom Wike said the effects of ozone layer depletion include increase in skin cancers, eye cataracts, aging of the skin, and general immune deficiency disorders, pointing out that Its effects on terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems reduce agricultural productivity and food supply.
Calling for collective efforts to keep the planet habitable, Justice Nyesom Wike maintained that human activities on the ozone layer affect all, including unborn children.
It would be recalled that the United Nations International Day for the Preservation of the Ozone Layer is celebrated on the 16th of September every year, to foster awareness on the dangers of the depletion of the ozone layer and advocate ways by which its depletion can be stopped.
