Young Poets Project Niger Delta To World

The Port Harcourt Literary Society says the monthly Open Mind Concert has changed the negative narratives of the Niger Delta.

The resident poet of Port Harcourt Literary Society Open Mind Concert, Amo Nnamdi, during the 12th edition of the program in Port Harcourt, said that young poets are now projecting the positive stories of Niger Delta to the world through poetry and arts.

According to Nnamdi, “This is part of what we should do as a society, to create an opportunity and a platform for as many youths we can gather around here to begin to share not just their arts but a better world view of the Niger Delta of their own dreams, aspirations and heritage.”

The Chairman of the Association of Nigerian Authors, Rivers State, Uzor Nnwamara said the Open mind concert has improved the capacity of young people in the Niger Delta region.

He said that many youths have been recruited into the list of poets during the exercise, stressing that the concert would help the youths develop courage to stand before the crowd to read the poems.

He further said, “It is not easy to stand out there to read a poem, you can read with your friends but not in a formal environment, before people you don’t know amongst whom are lecturers and other experienced poets.”
