FG To Prosecute Parents Over Child Absence From School

The Federal Government has declared that parents who refuse to send their children to school would henceforth be prosecuted.

The Minister of Education, Adamu Adamu who made the declaration in Abuja on Monday said the ministry had demanded the criminalization of the Act of not sending children to school as well as prosecution of such parents in the state.

“Although the responsibility for basic education belonged to the State and Local Governments, the Federal Government through the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC) had provided matching grants and other interventions of the 36 States to empower the Basic Education sector” He said.

However, the Minister is not just calling for the criminalization of this Act because it is already being effected in states like Sokoto, but also putting the law into effect.

The Minister reiterated the position of Sokoto State Governor, Aminu Tambuwal who opined that unless sending children to school is made a crime, and parents who refuse to send their wards to school is prosecuted, we may not see the desired changes.
