In order to reduce the rate of unemployment and the rate at which University graduates depend on white collar jobs, a university Don has called for the need to redesign the curricula of Nigeria’s educational system in order to put emphasis on entrepreneurship education that would enable graduates from the nation’s educational institutions to set up small businesses and become employers of labour.
Professor Rose Amachukwu made the call during her inaugural lecture entitled “Success As An Iceberg of Results-Oriented Education”, at the auditorium of Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, Port Harcourt.
She posited that for graduates from Nigeria’s tertiary institutions to be globally competitive, provision of adequate infrastructure and the welfare of teachers must be given utmost attention by the government.
Describing the classroom as a powerful laboratory and the foundation of what a graduate becomes outside the school system, the erudite scholar emphasized the need for careful planning of activities that take place there.
She advocated that since the society expects teachers and the educational system to address problems besieging humanity, it was expedient for government at all levels to embark on holistic approach to learning, so that Nigerian graduates could contribute their quota towards the development of the country.
On his part, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ozo-Mekuri Ndimele, while describing the lecturer as a world class academic, noted that the road to success is rough, and reminded the audience that success in every human endeavour comes as a result of hard work.
He, however, regretted that most people want to succeed without doing anything and assured that his administration was working towards repositioning the fortunes of the university.
He also disclosed that the institution’s graduate school is equipped with world class facilities, and is the fastest growing in the south of the sahara.
Earlier, the Registrar, Mrs. Hope Kue-Ikoro, had described the inaugural lecturer as a quintessential academic, while also noting the laudable contributions she has made towards the educational advancement of the university.
She also congratulated her on the occasion of the inaugural lecture, affirming that it is the height of academic pursuit for every accomplished academic.
