NOSRA Warns Of Coming Floods In Rivers Communities, Points Way Forward
The National Oil Spill Detection and Remediation Agency, NOSRA, has given a warning about an impending outbreak of environmental disaster in some local government areas of Rivers State as predicted by NIMETH concerning heavy flood in the year.
NOSRA zonal head, Sirus Nkangwon, said at his Port Harcourt office that communities who are exposed to oil spill and pollution in the state are more vulnerable as they would be exposed to contaminants with the rising flood in the year. NOSRA advised that local government authorities and NEMA to as a matter of urgency put in place alternative arrangements for the resettlement of the residents of the areas to the uplands before the flood begins. He noted that it would not be easy to control a situation where the water body rises. He also called for support from philanthropists to help relocate those that may be affected.
He promise to take advantage of the flood period to take statistics of the contamination level of the water in the affected communities in order to take records of the contaminant level of the water so as to advise on the appropriate remediation process.
