State-wide Sanitation Exercise: RIWAMA Sole Administrator, Bro. Obuah Delighted Over Residents’ Compliance
…As RIWAMA Creates More Dumpsites To Ease Waste Disposal
The Sole Administrator, Rivers State Waste Management Agency (RIWAMA), Bro. Felix Obuah has applauded residents and those doing business in the State for their appreciable turnout in today’s sanitation exercise across the State.
Bro. Obuah, who spoke to journalists shortly after monitoring the exercise in some sections of Port Harcourt, the State capital and its environs, also commended the people for complying with the order on restriction of human and vehicular movement.
He said he was overwhelmed with the participation of residents in the areas covered during the exercise which include Ikwerre Road; Rumueme, Rumuokwuta, Rumuokoro, Rumuagholu, Aluu in Ikwerre Local Government Area and Alode Eleme in Eleme Local Government Area.
The Sole Administrator also gave kudos to Service Providers with the Agency whom he said are doing well in ensuring timeous evacuation of refuse.
Bro. Obuah who was accompanied by a team of RIWAMA officials and journalists also visited two newly acquired dumpsites located in Alode in Eleme Local Government Area where construction work has reached advanced stage and Aluu in Ikwerre Local Government Area where work has been completed and the dumpsite is in use for dumping of wastes by Service Providers.
Addressing journalists, the Sole Administrator said the Alode dumpsite in Eleme was created to ease the evacuation of wastes for residents in the area and parts of Trans Amadi in Port Harcourt.
“The idea behind creating these dumpsites is to avoid a situation where refuse are taken from Eleme Local Government Area and other areas nearby to as far as the Aluu dumpsite for disposal. This has also gone a long way to ease the duties of Service Providers and give them logistic advantage”, Bro. Obuah declared.
The RIWAMA boss and his entourage also visited the new Airport Road dumpsite which the Sole Administrator explained, has been closed down having been filled to capacity and also made inaccessible by the deplorable state of the road.
Also visited was the new dumpsite in Aluu, Ikwerre Local Government Area said to be the largest in the State. Bro. Obuah said the creation of the site was necessitated by the closure of the disused new Airport Road dumpsite.
Asked whether the Agency intends to create more dumpsites to complement the existing ones, the RIWAMA boss affirmed that but for financial constraint, the Agency needs at least seven dumpsites due to the large volume of wastes being generated in Port Harcourt, the State capital and its environs on daily basis.
He called on public spirited individuals and corporate bodies to assist the Agency to create more dumpsites, to enable evacuation and dumping of the large volumes of wastes generated daily.
“We already have three existing dumpsites but it’s not enough. The volume of wastes generated in Port Harcourt and its environs is unprecedented and so we need not fewer than seven dumpsites to enable us take care of these wastes. We need more dumpsites and that’s why we are calling for assistance”, he said.
Bro. Obuah further appealed to residents, corporate bodies and all those doing business in Port Harcourt, the state capital and its environs to partner with RIWAMA to sustain the cleanliness of the city, adding that the business of cleaning the State should be a collective responsibility rather than left to the Agency alone.
