We’re Reinforcing Commitment To Tackling Killings In Hotels In Rivers State – Police

The Rivers State Police Command has said it’s shoring up its commitment to tackling the problem of killing of women in hotels in Rivers State.

Commissioner of Police, CP Mustapha Dandaura, who stated this on Tuesday in a press briefing at Police headquarters on Moscow Road, Port-Harcourt said the police was worried over the killings in hotels in Rivers State and was working to end the menace.

The Commissioner of Police said: “Today, I want to reinforce our commitment towards tackling this menace (of killing of women in hotels in Rivers State) and assure you that we have come to the end of these monstrous acts by desperate cultists and ritualists.

“So far, we have made substantial progress in the investigation of these killings. In one of the cases, the actual murder suspect has been arrested… (and) would have been paraded today (Tuesday) but we are still working on some clues given by him that may further aid our investigations”.

He said a total of eight women had been killed in various hotels in Rivers State in the past two months saying that he held a meeting with hotel owners on how to fight the crime.

He said it was resolved at the meeting that hotel owners should have CCTV cameras in their premises and do proper documentation of guests visiting their hotels saying that hotel guests should give vital information about themselves.

He also said it was agreed that hotel personnel should be trained on security in collaboration with Nigeria Police.

CP Dandaura said hotel owners should discourage act of giving accommodation to hotel guests on short-time basis, stating also that cars coming to hotels in the state should be profiled.

He also said persons should be in charge of swimming pools in hotels in the state where they exist, saying that a taskforce was constituted last week with Police and representatives of Department of State Services (DSS) and officials of Ministry of Culture and Tourism in the state to ensure guidelines are complied with by hotel operators in the state.

He described the killings as having “element of cultism” saying that the same method was applied by the perpetrators in the killings in hotels in the state.  According to him, the victims were drugged and strangled.

He said people should go about their lawful businesses in the state without fear and appealed for collaboration from the media to fight the crime.

He however said women should avoid prostitution and not see it as a way of earning a living because of hardship
