Women Ministry Plans To Showcase Untapped Girl Child Potentials

To showcase the great and untapped skills that the girl child is endowed with, the Rivers State Ministry of Women Affairs says it has concluded arrangement with the Town Planning Film and Actors Academy, a private film Academy located in Port Harcourt to train five girls from each of the 23 local government areas in the state.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Mrs. Atosemi Eson Teetito, disclosed this  during a one-day programme organized by her ministry to commemorate this year’s International day of the Girl Child.

She said the International Day of the Girl Child was adopted by the United Nations General Assembly to create awareness on the many challenges faced by the girl child and issues surrounding their lives while promoting their empowerment and fulfilment of their human rights.

According to her, empowering the girl child requires their active participation in decisions that affect their lives, giving them same educational privileges as boys and total eradication of all forms of gender based violence practices against women and girls and stopping of forced marriages amongst others.

Teetito said her ministry decided to embark on the empowerment through the film industry so that the girl child could  showcase their untapped potentials and great skills to the world adding that the training as planned will last for a period of three months.

She noted that this year’s theme “Girl Force: Unscripted and Unstoppable” recognizes the inner ability in girls as they strive to succeed despite their many challenges saying that girls are emerging entrepreneurs and innovators and called on well- meaning individuals to create a world which will be conducive for the girls of tomorrow to innovate and take charge of noting that they have all it takes to succeed.
