Medical Practioner Blames Recurring Cases Of Diabetes On Poor Lifestyle
The Rivers State President of Medical Women Association of Nigerian (MWAN), Doctor Vetty Agala has blamed the recurrent of diabetes in our society on poor life style choices and unhealthy habits.
She said this while talking to CRYSTAL EXPRESS on how best to combat diabetes and reduce it’s occurrence in the Society
She said that diabetes though a lifelong condition that can run in families can be caused by poor lifestyle choices.
She also stated that the sickness is not curable but can be managed to prevent complications by diet, exercise and medications.
“Diabetes affects people of all ages, regardless of geography or income, help your family find out if they’re at risk of type 2 diabetes and learn about the simple action that can be taken to reduce the impact of the condition”.
“Diabetes can be prevented by adopting healthy lifestyle choices, so take action today by knowing your weight and waist measurement, eat lots of fruits and vegetables and exercise 30 minutes every day for 5 days”, she advised.
Regretting that 50 percent of Nigerians are not aware they are diabetic, she pointed out that testing and screening will help reduce the burden.
On how the association celebrated this year’s World Diabetes Day, Dr Agala hinted that MWAN organised an awareness road walk that featured awareness talks, distribution of flyers, free screening among other things.
It would be recalled that MWAN has so far screened 25 thousand women on gestational diabetes in 42 communities in Rivers state.
