Vigilantes  In Police Net For Allegedly Shooting  Man

Reports say two members of a vigilante group operating around Ojiebu axis of Mile 3, Diobu, Port Harcourt, Rivers State are being detained by the Nkpolu Divisional Police headquarters in Diobu for allegedly shooting a man at Abuja bypass axis of building material market in Mile 111 recently, National Network gathered.

The man and a union member of Goat Meat Sellers Association Bishop Okoye line, Mile 3 market was accosted by the vigilante members on their way to their business place along Abuja by pass that early morning of the day the incident occurred, our source revealed. The source explained that the security outfit was quizzing the man and his colleagues when an argument ensued.

We learned that the victims sensing dangers took to their heels and in the process of running away, one of the vigilante members allegedly shot the man on his leg and the security personnel fled the scene leaving the victim in the pool of blood.

We gathered that passersby later rushed the man to the Nkpolu Divisional Police headquarters where a medical form was issued to him before he proceeded to the hospital.

The source disclosed that two of the vigilante members suspected to be involved in the shooting were later arrested by officers of Nkpolu Divisional where they are presently detained. The spokesperson of Rivers State Police command, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Nnamdi Omoni did not respond to text messages sent to him on enquiry into the issue neither did he pick several calls put across to him by our reporter.

However, an executive of Goat Meat Sellers Association Bishop Okoye line, who preferred to remain anonymous, confirmed the incident. He added that the gunshot victim is receiving treatment at a Government hospital in the state.

In the meantime, a source informed our reporter that the leader of the vigilante has been invited by the Police for questioning. Investigation by National Network showed that the vigilante group was not permitted to bear guns.

National Network had reported last week how the Police arrested vigilante members who held suspected phone thief hostage after he was apprehended.
