Police Should be Professional, Rivers People Appeal
People in Rivers State have appealed to Nigeria Police to be professional in discharge of their duty.
This followed report of incident in Ogun State where a policeman told a rape suspect to write undertaking that he would not disturb rape victim he earlier raped.
The suspect however again raped the victim named Favour for rebuffing his advances and beat and pushed her into deep pit in Igbara area of Ogun State where she sustained life-threatening injury.
The report said the family of the victim wants the suspect named Goddey Robinson aged 28 to be prosecuted for endangering her life.
Reacting to the incident on popular radio station 92.3FM Nigeria Info, people of the state had expressed shock over the incident.
One Ezekiel had expressed shock that the policeman had asked the suspect to write an undertaking in the rape case.
Another caller Friday said though some police officers carry out their jobs professionally there were bad eggs among them and said that they should be caused to feel shame.
Friday said: “The Nigeria Police needs total overhauling. They should flush out the bad eggs…It’s very terrible”.
Another caller said that it was unfortunate situation people find themselves in the country saying the police could do most ugly things.
He also criticized the police for demanding tips on the highway.
Another caller Emmanuel said the incident showed level of decay in the country saying what happened was annoying.
A caller John said that things happen because people were not checked on how they do their job.
Another caller Kenneth said that the Nigeria Police was a shame and disgrace to the country.
On social media, people also reacted to the incident.
David on social media said the story was sad and suggested that policemen involved should be dealt with.
Kelechi on social media also said the incident was unfortunate saying that he felt for the victim but expressed hope justice would speak for her.
Another social media user said that rape issue was very serious and said that the government should deal with it in ways suspects would not dream of committing the act again.
The report said that the victim was raped on her way from work on April 23, 2020 and admitted in hospital in Lagos fighting for life.
The Ogun State Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyemi, reportedly said the suspect would be charged to court for rape and attempted murder.
