“Damage Done To My Property Worth  N200m” 

A petitioner has told the Judicial Commission of Inquiry that damage done to his property by police would cost about two hundred million naira.

Testifying at the commission, Hon Dabotubo Briggs had said that a former Divisional Police Officer led his men including the operatives of Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) (now disbanded) to vandalize his hotel on July 9, 2017 along Trans Kalabari Road, Rumuolumeni, Port-Harcourt.

He told the commission that the damage done to the property would cost about two hundred million.

The commission had earlier gone to see things for themselves at the location where the hotel was vandalized.

When asked to list things destroyed, the petitioner mentioned the entrance gate, reception door, restaurant bar, chairs and electronics and VIP restaurant and furniture as among those that were destroyed in the hotel.

He was cross-examined by  counsel to the police, A.A. Jonah.

Under cross-examination, the petitioner said when he was told that security operatives were at the gate of his property he had called the Divisional Police Officer of Rumuolumeni but got no response.

When the counsel asked whether he also called control room, the petitioner said that he did not call the control room because he was not having contact.

When he was also asked about any other step taken, the petitioner said that he had  also gone to see the DPO but that he would not see him.

He also said the contacted his lawyer over the case.

The petitioner who said he only came to see the damage to his properly said he was not around when the property was vandalized.

The case was adjourned to December 30 for continuation.

In an interview, the petitioner said that he did not know the reason for the attack.

He also said there was no information from the police before the hotel was vandalized.

The petitioner said that he had no problem with the police adding that the hotel had been under lock and key since July 9, 2017.
