Human Rights Advocate Alleges Injustice, Cautions Police
A human rights advocate, Barrister Higher King, has alleged injustice in alleged bulldozing of property at Royal Estate in Rukpokwu and cautioned the police against aiding illegal activity.
Addressing reporters, the human rights advocate said that individuals assisted by the police had bulldozed property at the estate owned by his clients.
He alleged that the police were aiding those destroying the property.
Barrister King who described the act as “land grabbing” warned the police against helping those carrying out illegal activity.
Barrister King said: “We called you (reporters) concerning the injustice that has been meted to house owners at Royak Estate behind SARS at Rukpokwu. I was there on Sunday (and) I saw the bulldozer myself. The bulldozer is there. They are bulldozing (property belonging to) the members of the estate, their properties. They have a standby truck and they carry everything away and police is standing by and aiding and abetting this heinous crime”.
He said he was not sure if it was about court judgement as a judgement by a court would have to be carried out by the court and not individuals.
He called on the Rivers State government and the police to bring the act to a stop saying that people should not take the law into their own hands.
He also said that people should follow due process, adding that the police should keep off civil matters.
Also speaking, the Chancellor of the International Society for Social Justice and Human Rights, Dr. Omenazu Jackson, said that there was an ongoing property-grabbing operation aided by the police in most parts of the state.
For his part, the Chairman of the Royal Estate, Mr Wonkwo Edward, said they were not aware the land they occupied was under legal dispute.
