Gunmen Raze Police Stations In Anambra, Abia

No fewer than 20 gunmen in the early hours of Monday attacked the Zonal Police Headquarters, Zone 13, Ukpo in Dunukofia Local Government Area of Anambra State.

They razed some offices and scores of vehicles during the attack.

Reasons behind the attack could not be ascertained as of press time.

A police officer, who pleaded anonymity, said the hoodlums were rebuffed from getting into the armoury department of the place.

“Our men prevented them from having ingress into our armoury. I can’t tell you the number of casualties now because we have scanty information about the development,” he said.

An eyewitness said there was heavy gunshots before the offices and vehicles were set ablaze.

Efforts to reach the Zonal Police Public Relations Officer, Nkeiru Nwode, proved abortive as of press time.

Meanwhile, gunmen also on early hours of Monday reportedly attacked and razed down a police station in Uzoakoli, Bende Local Government Area of Abia state.

Residents of the area said that the hoodlums overpowered policemen guarding the station and freed the detainees.

It was further gathered that some parts of the building and exhibit vehicles were burnt by the hoodlums.

Though information about the incident is still sketchy, it could not be confirmed if any policeman was killed.

Spokesman of the Abia State Police Command, SP Geoffrey Ogbonna, was yet to respond to calls and message sent to his mobile number as at the time of filing this report.

It was not however clear if the gunmen invaded the police armoury.
