Orphanage Appeals For Skills Acquisition Support

Children from Saviour Orphanage Home, along Rumuokoro Port Harcourt Rivers State have expressed deep desire to acquire skills, in addition to going to schools, as a way of securing a better future.

This was expressed during the visit to the children’s home by the National Network. Speaking to this medium about activities of the orphanage, a senior staff of Saviour Home, Rebecca Igodo, stated that the children of the orphanage remained happy as public spirited individuals continue to ensure that they lack noting.

But she said that the orphanage children, especially those aged between 15 and 17 years had been calling for opportunity to embrace skills acquisition. According to her, the interest of the children stemmed from their understanding of the reality of the present dispensation that going to school may not be enough but the need for additional skills to help them cope with future challenges.

She stated that the teenagers among the children of the home have demonstrated that hard work pays, calling on government, philanthropists and other concerned individuals to help actualize their dreams by helping ensure they were exposed to relevant trainings such as carpentry, hair styling, make-up artistry, wielding, aluminum work and many others.

“I believe that they know what is going on in the society and they don’t want to be caught napping. It will help them in many ways to live a fulfilled life as some of them are already showing their passion for such skills,” she opined.

She used the occasion to appreciate everyone who in one way or the other had helped to contribute meaningfully to the running of the orphanage home.

She said that following the death of the Director of the orphanage it is incumbent on the remaining management and staff to ensure that the vision lives on.

She noted that the orphanage would require more furniture to help organize the children and ensure that everyone of them have a place. “We also need additional furniture and bedding materials. Presently, we do not have babies but children whose age range from 3years and 17 years.

“We teach them morals as to strengthen their minds and make them feel loved, just as good people, including couples, individuals, children, Christian Churches, Muslims and organizations use to come around to provide for these children. The children themselves are appreciative, that is why they join hands to pray for every donor who visit to give something no matter how small,” she explained.

She also expressed joy that, with reduction in the spread of Covid-19 and resumption of school, the school schedule now helps the centre to cope better, because the children now attend school at different times which largely was responsible for good space management at the centre.

She called for more supports for the orphanage home at all times to ensure that the children are not in lack of material things.
