How Territorial Control Is Aggravating Killings In Ogoni
Kono Boue community in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State in recent times has witnessed killings that saw many natives flee the area and take refuge in nearby communities and Bori town.
The invading gunmen in some of the attacks killed both young and elderly men .
Reports say the Iceland cult group which was dislodged from the community by rival Deygbam cult group is suspected to be responsible for the recent invasion and killings in the community in a bid to regain the lost territory.
The Iceland cult group is said to be working in the belief that their rival conscripted and administered oath on every youth resident in the community after they(Iceland)were dislodged hence the decision to shoot on sight any youth whenever they invade the community.
Sources say the Iceland group is of the notion that almost all the residents in the community are either members of Deygbam cult group or their sympathizers.
Meanwhile Public Relations Officer of the Community Development Committee (CDC) Golden Nwibakpo in an interview with our reporter maintained that most of the people killed by gunmen in recent times were innocent persons who were not members of any cult groups .
Mr Nwibakpo regretted that innocent persons who had no link with any cult group were been killed.
It would be recalled that on Saturday 15th May 2021 gunmen suspected to be cultists invaded the community and killed four young men simply identified as Lekara Bira, 32 years old, Torka 40 years old and two others in the wee hours.
The Ak 47 rifle-wielding gunmen shot at any young man on sight.
Also the gunmen penultimate Sunday killed Nkpa Awolowo, a fifty-eight-year-old man in the community.
Three suspected kidnappers/cultists said to be members of Deygbam cult group were also killed in the community in a fierce gun battle with men of Bori Police Division last month.
SP Nnamdi Omoni, spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, confirmed some of the killings.
