Capt. Elechi Amadi Polytechnic Matriculates Over 2,000 Students
… Enlisted For TETfund/ITF/PDTF Support
A total number of 2,198 students were formally admitted into various academic programmes of Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic, Rumuola, Port Harcourt at the 30th Matriculation ceremony of the institution Thursday, June 24, for the 2020/2021 academic session.
The historic event which held amid strict adherence to subsisting COVID-19 pandemic and security measures was graced by only physically selected, accredited members of the academic board of the polytechnic, congregation, Students Union Government and fresh students.
Addressing the excited matriculants, parents and guests at the ceremony, the rector of the polytechnic, Dr. Samuel B. Kalagbor reeled out what he called impressive achievements and developments in the institution since the change in its nomenclature from ‘College’ to ‘Polytechnic’ in 2016 courtesy His Excellency, Chief Barr. Nyesom Wike, executive governor of Rivers State and Visitor to the polytechnic who signed into law the change of name to Captain Elechi Amadi Polytechnic by the Port Harcourt Polytechnic (Amendment) Law No. 13, 2019.
Of particular interest, the rector noted, is the institutional accreditation of the polytechnic by the Institute of Chartered Accountant of Nigeria (ICAN), the Chartered Institute of Bankers of Nigeria (CIB) and accreditation of 15 programmes at National and Higher National Diploma (HND) levels by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE) in 2019.
According to Dr. Kalagbor, the Polytechnic is also expecting the Accreditation/Resource Inspection visit of the NBTE to approve more programmes following submissions made in January this year to the accreditation body to lessen the burden of mounting unaccredited programmes and subjecting students and graduates to difficulties.
He expressed appreciation on behalf of the management, staff and students of the polytechnic to Governor Nyesom Wike for his interest and unprecedented support to the institution which according to the rector, has shot up the polytechnic as a citadel of academic excellence in the State and one of the first choice among its peers in the country to prospective students.
Reassuring that the gains so far gained by the polytechnic through the instrumentality of His Excellency and the reconstituted 2nd Governing Council under the Chairmanship of distinguished Senator Engr. Lee Maeba, the rector thanked the Governor for the simultaneous approval and release of funds for two major projects in the institution: the construction of two storey Governing Council Building complex and construction of internal roads and drainages in the polytechnic.
“Management will continue to make sustained efforts to have more programmes accredited by the NBTE and to do this, Academic Board will ensure that the content of all our programmes are in conformity with the acceptable standards of NBTE and practically relevant to the demands of industries and needs of our State. It is for this reason that entrepreneurship education occupies a strategic part of the polytechnic curricula to prepare its graduates for job placements in the industry, government and other social and technical services as well as enrolment for further studies in the universities and other professional institutions”, Dr. Kalagbor declared.
While welcoming and congratulating for the opportunity of being admitted into the polytechnic, the rector advised the matriculating students to abide by the rules and regulations of the polytechnic, engage in legitimate and useful activities on campus such as Student Union Government and various registered social and religious organizations, stressing that the polytechnic has zero tolerance for vices ranging from secret cult and related activities, sexual harassment, examination malpractices, indecent dressing, drug abuse, gambling etc on the part of students and staff.
The highlight of the occasion was the taking of the matriculation oath and the signing of matriculation register by the students which confer on them all rights, privileges, responsibilities and obligations as bonafide students of the polytechnic.
