‘Neighbourhood Watch’ Needs To Be Armed – Man O’ War Commandant
The National Deputy Commandant of the Man O’ War, operations, intelligence, monitoring & Rescue, Commander Kriss Natty Rissy has suggested that for the Rivers State government security outfit (Neighbourhood Watch) to make the desired impact in the society, they have to be armed and their uniform changed to something smart and befitting as they look like Taskforce members in their current uniform.
Speaking with newsmen over the weekend, the commandant said that despite the politics that was introduced into the conception of the outfit, the truth remains that the state not only requires a private armed security outfit to complement the security operatives in their fight against criminality but that the country needs the introduction of the State Police going by the worsening security situation.
When reminded that the Director-General of the Neighbourhood Watch, rtd ACP Uche Chukwuma said their job is just intelligence gathering to assist the security operatives, Commander Rissy punctured that idea. “How on earth can one wear a uniform to secretly gather an information from criminals, even with bare hands”.
He disregarded the said statement from the D-G as political, adding that if the government is serious, the outfit should be armed against the bandits and herdsmen who are carrying superior firearms.
Commander Rissy however lauded Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike for what he described as his excellent performance these past six years, he has been at the helm of affairs of the state.
He however appealed to the governor to pay more attention to Human Capital Development and stomach infrastructure as according to him, “there is hunger and poverty in the land”.
The Man O’ War Commander noted that his organization is fully structured, have offices all over the nation with the benefit of constant training as a standby force like the National Guard.
“We are available to support in combating the security situation if contacted”, The government should be able to look inward”, he said.
On the proposed Petroleum Industrial Bill (PIB) that is awaiting the president’s accent he described the 3% equity share provided for the host communities as inadequate.
He said the National Assembly members were sentimental in their consideration of the bill after many years, advising that it should be totally rejected from this point.
He accused the APC-led federal government of being insincere in handling the affairs and welfare of the people of the country.
Commander Rissy made it clear that the various agitations in the country is due to the imbalance in the nation and the insensitivity of the Nigerian leaders to do something.
He declared that the situation now in the country is either the agitators like Mazi Nnamdi Kanu or Mr. Sunday Igboho are called upon for negotiation or they should be allowed to secede to their own nation.
“Alternatively the country should be restructured to give every area a sense of belonging or we practice a confederation where states are encouraged to extract and develop their area and contribute a certain amount to the centre.
He said that though he is not aversed to the mutilation of the nation because of its negative effects, it appears to be the only option going by the attitude of the federal government perhaps through a civil war.
