NURTW Chairman Promises To Improve Members Welfare, Says No Faction Amongst Members
The chairman of the Rivers State Council of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Chief Eleazar Monday (JP), says despite the proliferation of few unions in the transportation sector, the leadership of the union in the state would continue to promote and improve the welfare and well-being of its members across the state.
He gave the assurance on Tuesday in a chat with newsman in his office in Port Harcourt.
According to him, given that the primary purpose of any union is the welfare and well-being of its members the chairman of NURTW in the state will always improve on the welfare of its members. Besides, the main feature of the constitution of NURTW is the welfare of members.
Chief Monday stated that since the establishment of the union a couple of decades ago the welfare of members has been a top priority.
On the report in some section of the media that the union has been duplicated in the state, Chief Monday said: “I am aware of one union or association which say they are transporters. However, I want to tell you that the law establishing NURTW states that any person involved in transportation of goods and persons on road is a member of NURTW. Therefore, member of Urban Drivers Welfare Association are also members of NURTW”.
The chairman pointed out that since he came on board as the state chairman of NURTW he has been able to streamline some of the transportation unions including, Urban Drivers Welfare Association.
“When I came on board as the State Chairman of NURTW I noticed that they were not properly registered and constituted. Hence, I invited them for a meeting and asked them that let us reason together”, Chief Monday added.
He described members of the Urban Drivers Welfare Association and others as foot soldiers of NURTW, noting that he has asked them to draw his attention anywhere there are issues.
“As foot soldiers of NURTW I have told them that any where there are issues or any where members of our union are being harassed and taken off the road please draw my attention. After our meeting and interaction they accepted the decision we reached and they affiliated to NURTW, Chief Monday explained”.
He urged other zones of NURTW in the state to get their act together and emulate the example of Ahoada Zone of NURTW.
