Military police from Ibadan, Oyo State, have been detained the alleged killing of a vehicle dealer, Adeyinka Adekunle, at the Army Barracks in Ibodi, Osun State, according to the Osun State Police Command.
Adeyinka, 37, died after soldiers from the Ibodi Barracks allegedly tortured him on the orders of one Lt. Tobi Akindapo.
On March 24, the deceased and a buddy, Solomon Ogundare, went to a leisure location in Ilesha’s Imo neighborhood.
Soon later, a quarrel erupted as three mufti troops begged the pals for drinks, which they declined.
As the brawl escalated, one of the military officers called the Ibodi barracks, and soldiers were dispatched to the scene.
Adeyinka managed to flee the scene, but his friend was apprehended and sent to the barracks.
When Adeyinka went to the barracks with his friend’s sister, Elizabeth Itunu, the next day to gain the release of his vehicle and Ogundare, the soldiers caught him.
Despite appeals for their release, she said the military men refused and demanded N500,000 in exchange for Adeyinka’s car, which they hauled to the barracks after he fled the scene.
That night, both guys were detained in the guardroom.
The woman claimed that when she went to the barracks the next day, she found her pals cutting grass while being lashed and kicked by the troops.
“I observed that Adeyinka was very weak. He suddenly fell. They thought he was pretending and they started hitting him. When they saw that he was not moving, they checked his body and their boss said he should be rushed to a hospital,” Itunu stated.
“At that point, I became afraid as I saw that my brother was not breathing well. Their commander asked us to take my brother to a hospital as well.”
My brother later told me that while he and Adeyinka were in the guardroom, he (Adeyinka) vomited. The soldiers then ordered him to start eating his vomit,” she added.
While requesting that the troops be brought to justice, the deceased’s father, Pa David Adekunle, 79, accused the Osu Divisional Police Officer, Ebenezer Akinsanya, of seeking to bury the matter.
