COVID-19: Health-Based NGOs To Stop Selfless Services In Rivers  Over Alleged Police Harassment

Report reaching National Network news desk suggests that health based Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) in Rivers State carrying out sensitization in the state in the face of Covid-19 rampaging the world may stop rendering such selfless service.

The report may not be unconnected to alleged harassment of the health workers by the Police.

National Network gathered that last Friday four health workers attached to Greater Women Initiative For Rights And Health were reportedly arrested by officers from Police Station at Abua central in Abua/Odual Local Government Area of the State.

A source in the community informed our reporter that the Police arrested the health workers on the grounds that they wanted to know the health workers were authorized to go from house to house to sensitize people.

Our source disclosed that the health workers were released immediately the Police authority in the state got wind of the development, which  was described by a Police source as illegal arrest.

The programme Manager of the NGO, Peace Bai in a telephone chat with our reporter confirmed the arrest and release of the health workers. She urged the Police Authority to caution their officers .

The Police Public Relations Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Nnamdi Omoni did not pick calls put across to him neither did he respond to text messages sent to him by our reporter.
