Wiwa’s 29th Anniversary: Rev Probel Williams Insists Justice, Apology Must Be Served
As Ogonis and people of good conscience all over the world commemorate the 29th anniversary of the killing of environmentalist Ken Saro-Wiwa, the leader of the Ogoni Peoples Assembly (OPA), Rev. Probel Williams has reechoed the call for justice, equity and need for the federal government to tender apology to the Ogoni people over the unfortunate act.
The OPA leader while honouring the memories of Saro-Wiwa and eight other Ogoni leaders who were falsely accused, imprisoned, and brutally executed by the Nigerian government, said the day served as a painful reminder for the Ogoni people, who were wrongfully accused, imprisoned, and murdered without fair trial.
He emphasized that the ongoing struggles of the Ogoni people, including their fight for justice, resource control, and recognition of the atrocities they have faced are not just local issues, but resonate globally, highlighting the urgent need for environmental justice and human rights advocacy.
While calling for solidarity from international communities to support their cause and ensure that their voices are heard, Rev. Williams likened the situation of the Ogoni to genocide and called on the Nigerian government to acknowledge its past actions and issue a formal apology. Rev Williams demanded for justice and environmental redemption, seeking exoneration for Saro-Wiwa and the other leaders. The OPA leader further urged the government to prosecute those responsible for the genocide and provide fair compensation to the victims’ families.
