Poised to address the competency gaps that exist among mathematics teachers in Rivers State, the Ministry of Education in partnership with Bunmi Adedayo Foundation, has trained over 300 mathematics teachers in subject Enhancement programme in mathematics.
The three days programme which took place at Government Girls Secondary School Rumuokwuta, had teachers from public and Private Schools drawn from Obio/Akpor and Port Harcourt Local Governments Areas.
Declaring the training open, the Commissioner for Education, Prof. Chinedu Mmom, assured that the ministry under his watch will continue to prioritise the welfare of teachers while engaging in series of training and re-training of teachers as a way of building their capacities to function better.
He enjoined the teachers to use the training as an opportunity to enhance their knowledge in modern mathematics inorder to become better teachers and thanked Bunmi Adedayo Foundation for the partnership.
On her part, the Executive Director of Bunmi Adedayo Foundation, Ms Oluwakemi Odedeyi said her organisation works to innovatively improve the learning and understanding of modern mathematics in students through the training of teachers in mathematics teaching techniques.
She said, the subject Enhancement programme in mathematics is one of the intervention initiatives of her organisation to address the competency gaps that exist among mathematics teachers while focusing on psychology of mathematics, pedagogy of mathematics, 21st century Model mathematics lesson preparation and delivery among others.
She thanked Rivers State Government and the Commissioner for Education for accepting the partnership and releasing Rivers teachers for the training adding that the organisation will return to train more teachers in the second and third phase of the training programme.
Speaking on behalf of the beneficiaries, the principal of Government Girls Secondary School Rumuokwuta, Mrs Gladys Ogbonna Promise thanked the Commissioner for Education Prof Chinedu Mmom for partnering with Bunmi Adedayo Foundation to train mathematics teachers in the state.
Bunmi Adedayo Foundation is a non-governmental organisation based in Lagos State, Nigeria.
