Fire Safety Codes must be Regarded by Public – Superintendent
An Assistant Fire Superintendent in the Federal Fire Service, Abass Ereben, has stated that the enforcement of the National Fire Safety Code , which contains what should be done to prevent the spread of fire during emergencies will soon be commenced.
The Assistant Fire Superintendent said that: there is the need to enlighten the public about the enforcement of the National Fire Safety Code and to also sensitize people about fire safety at home and work place. The code empowers us to carry out fire risk assessment, because prevention is better than cure. When we go to homes and companies and we see what you have, we advise and make recommendations for you and depending we give you some time duration to close down. This will make our job a lot easier, once you comply with all the necessary fire safety regulation codes.”
According to him, fire prevention is the responsibility of everyone in the society. He advised that every home should be fitted with fire equipment in order to prevent fire outbreaks in the event of an emergency.
”We need to take fire serious, because it is not a respecter of any person. When it happens, it affects people mentally and psychologically. People need to have fire extinguishers in their homes and know how to do what is called exit drill. You need to also train your children, how to escape in case of fire outbreak. And also, nothing stops any one from having a small fire detector around him, ”he said.
But he expressed disappointment that whenever fire outbreaks occur hoodlums were usually around to take advantage of the incident, instead of making a genuine attempts at helping to put out the fire and safe lives. He also noted that activities of the hoodlums at the scene of fire accident also prevent firemen from carrying out their jobs effectively. He called on the masses to continue to collaborate with fire fighters in order to achieve better result.
He informed that government has purchased fire equipments such as the fire trucks which been have distributed to states in the country, expressing confidence that more will soon follow.
