Omattah, a resident of Shagari Dei Dei, Abuja, is being prosecuted on an eight-count charge bordering on assault, causing grievous hurt, intimidation and deceit.
He was reported to have assaulted his estranged lover by beating her, tearing her clothes and damaging her Toyota Camry car.
According to the prosecution, the offence allegedly committed by the lawyer was contrary to the provisions of Sections 123, 114, 240, 264, 326, 342, 391 and 396 of the penal code law.
The defendant, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge preferred against him by the prosecution.
At the resumed hearing of the case on Thursday, the prosecution witness, who was also the nominal complainant, Elsie Imaikop told the court that she and the defendant had been in a relationship since 2012 and that he proposed marriage to her.
According to her, she contributed to the successful completion of Omattah’s legal training at the Nigerian Law School, after which he was called to the Nigerian Bar.
She stated that she got to know that her ex-lover was in a new relationship through his sister, adding that while he kept deceiving her with the promise of marriage, the defendant secretly arranged and got married to a police officer.
Answering questions while being cross-examined by the counsel for the defendant, Dauda Mohmoh, Imaikop told the court that when she was informed of Omattah’s new relationship by his sister, she did not believe it until she saw his traditional marriage pictures on the social media.
She added that after she got to know that her ex-lover had fixed a wedding date, she went to report the matter to his pastor, a move she said did not go down well with the defendant.
According to Imaikop, after she reported the issue to the pastor, Omattah came to her house with a cutlass and threatened to kill her.
She informed that the defendant bite her index finger when they engaged in a tussle in a bid to defend herself.
Meanwhile, the presiding judge, Justice Silvanus Oriji adjourned the case till July 24.
