Doctors Without Borders have expressed worries over the soaring cases of child abuse and rape cases in Port Harcourt based on avertable records in its possession.
According to a community health educator for the organization, Veronica Uweh, who claimed about 120 rape cases were recorded every month, with an average of 70 to 80 per cent. She explained that most of the victims of abuse are usually aged below 15 years. She argued that many are yet to come to the health center to report cases of abuse against them.
She stated that the organization would be ready to provide treatment to those who may be violated to prevent HIV from being transmitted to them. She said that such treatment would only last for three days, as she lamented that many still failed to come forward due to stigma. She observed that many who failed to explore such channel usually run along with other consequences , which include Sexually Transmitted Infection, STI, apart from unintended pregnancies which often come with complications.
She challenged young people, most especially the underage in the society who may be violated to report to appropriate quarters and seek necessary medical treatment from Doctors Without Borders in the State.
The community health educator stated this recently, on the sideline of awareness seminar on child abuse.
