There was pandemonium in Akwaka, Phase 3, Road 3 in Rumuodomaya, Obi/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State following an alleged killing of one Anele Tasie by a man said to be his tenant’s son.
National Network learned that the deceased had rented a space some weeks ago to the mother of the suspect who deals on Akara and she agreed to pay the balance of her rent in a later date. The victim, had gone to demand the remaining money from his tenant on Tuesday, September 10, 2019, at about 09:18am when an argument ensued and the woman’s son allegedly used a matchete to cut the victim on the head.
National Network gathered that as the victim’s family members were rushing him to a hospital, some hoodlums started vandalizing property in the area. The victim was taken to Military hospital after he was allegedly rejected in a private hospital close by and was confirmed dead in Military hospital.
A source said that the timely intervention of Police stopped an angry mob from destroying the private hospital as the mob accused the hospital of not attending to the victim before he was transferred to Military hospital where he died. Our reporter saw four police patrol vans stationed in front of the private hospital as at 3:30pm to prevent breakdown of law and order.
Our source said that the suspect simply identified as Izuchukwu was rescued from the mob by men of Rumuokoro Police Division and was detained.
Immediate elder brother of the victim, Aleruchi Tasie, confirmed the incident to National Network but declined further comments.
The spokesperson of Rivers State Police Command, DSP Nnamdi Omoni, also confirmed the incident in a telephone interview with our reporter and said the suspect was in police custody.
Investigation revealed that the deceased was a native of Rumuodomaya, was aged 40 and was single.
The Chairman of Adepenuzubia Youth Organization in Rumuodomaya Town, Engr Chile Ekwe, condemned the killing of Mr Tasie and called on the Police to ensure that justice was done in the case while urging youths in the area to remain calm and peaceful.
He dismissed rumours going the rounds that youths in the community were involved in arson attack and destruction of property after news of Mr Anele’s death filtered into the community.
He said youths of the community were peace-loving and would not take laws into their own hands no matter the provocation.
