The Federal Government on Monday said only schools designated as centres for the West African Senior School Certificate Examinations (WASSCE) and in respect of the exiting classes would re-open in view of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Minister of State for Education, Mr Emeka Nwajiuba, said this at the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19 briefing. He disclosed this addressing the media in Abuja.
”All primary schools and all other classes were excluded,” he said.
Nwajiuba said that WAEC had agreed that only exams peculiar to Nigeria would be taken. This would be from September 5 to September 14; while exams common to all West Africa countries would proceed from September 17.
Further, he said that Nigeria would domesticate its own time-table for the exams; while revision classes would start from today.
Nwajiuba also said a report on states’ preparedness for the reopening in view of COVID-19; was expected on July 31. He noted that this would inform which centres would open; how they would open and to address all gaps. In addition, he noted that all state Governors, Commissioners for Education and all other stakeholders; had given their commitment to provide teachers, while WAEC would provide invigilators to ensure seamless conduct at the centres.
Meanwhile, the Federal Government has disclosed that it has no insight on when the worrisome upward curve of the COVID-19 pandemic will begin to flatten in Nigeria.
Reports say that the Minister of Health, Dr Osagie Ehanire, made this declaration on Monday, July 27, 2020.
Specifically, he was speaking in Abuja at the 53rd national briefing of the Presidential Task Force (PTF) on COVID-19. Further, Ehanire revealed that sampling has crossed the quarter million mark in Nigeria; with 262,579 Nigerians tested for COVID-19 in the last five months.
