A practicing journalist in Rivers State, Prince Uwaifo Oviawe has been installed as the 8th president of the Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Highrise District 9141.
The installation ceremony which took place over the weekend at Beverly Hills Hotels, GRA, Port Harcourt witnessed many dignitaries.
In his welcome address, the president-elect/membership chair, Rtn Alabo (Engr.) Austin Bob-Manuel gave an insight into aims and objectives of the humanitarian services organization. He disclosed that it gives members the opportunity to serve humanity and as well set an ethical standard of behavior in the society. He used the opportunity to appeal to interesting guests to join the organization and contribute their own quota.
Also speaking, the immediate past president of the body, Rtn Jesica Ogechi Dike said Rotary Club of Port Harcourt Highrise District 9141 gives one opportunity to play a leadership role and as well to reach out to the less privileged in the society.
While reeling out some of her modest achievements in her Rotarian year, M/s Dike promised to support her successor to surpass her own achievements as she extolled his sterling leadership qualities.
Speaking shortly after his installation, and induction of the 2020/2021 Board of Directors, Rtn Prince Oviawe thanked the body for the opportunity given him to serve humanity.
He confessed that his major source of excitement for the day was creating a record of inducting 17 members at a go and promised to do more if given the necessary support.
Rtn Oviawe used the opportunity to map out some of his programme during his one year tenure to include, drilling of a borehole project at Bori Community secondary school in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State.
“We shall also provide seven (7) seat toilet facilities and refurbish their laboratory facilities,” he said.
The Rotary president said his administration will equally embark on health awareness and free medical programme at Abonnema community in Akuku-Toru Local Government Area of the state.
He further disclosed that they were going to set up bill boards in strategic area of their jurisdiction that will add in sensitizing the public on the need to observe all the COVID-19 protocols for safety purposes of the public.
Rtn Oviawe also said his administration plans to embark on town hall meetings to emphasise on the need for peaceful coexistence in the society through peace and conflict resolution programmes.
Highlights of the event was the conferment of awards to some distinguished personalities who have impacted on the society including Rt. Hon. Victoria Wobo Nyeche, Hon. (Amb) Sobomabo Jackrich, High Chief David Briggs, Zonal Director, DAAR Communication, Mrs Remi Olu-Akerele, DPO, Old GRA Divisional Police Headquarters, CSP Opadola Rachel, Surv. Emma Wike and Engr. Chukwudi Dimkpa.
