Defendant Faces Assault Charge Of Beating Victim
In alleged violation of the law, a defendant, Telema Jonny, aged 63 has come against the law for allegedly beating his victim and causing her bodily harm and is being prosecuted.
He was arraigned before a Port-Harcourt Magistrate Court – Court 17 – on three counts presided by Chief Magistrate Betty Sunny-Hart, Esq.
The suspect was arraigned on December 14 and had pleaded not guilty to the charges.
It was said that the defendant and his accomplice who is at large allegedly beat up their victim and caused her bodily harm by pushing her against an iron door and allegedly also destroyed her handbag.
When the charges were read, the 63-year-old defendant pleaded not guilty.
The charges said: “That you Telema Jonny ‘m’ and Tamunoemi Wokoma ‘m’ now at large on the 2nd day of December, 2021 at No 2, Bank Road, Port-Harcourt in the Port-Harcourt Magisterial District did conspire amongst yourselves to commit felony to wit: Assault Occasioning Harm and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 516 (A) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria, 1999.
“That you Telema Jonny ‘m’ and Tamunoemi Wokoma ‘m’ now at large on the same date and place in the aforesaid Magisterial District did unlawfully assault one Princess Chukwu ‘f’ after beating her, pushed her on an iron protector door on her right hand which caused her harm and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 355 of the Criminal Code, Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria, 1999”.
The third count said: “That you Telema Jonny ‘m’ and Tamunooemi Wokoma ‘m’ now at large on the same date and place in the aforesaid Magisterial District did damage and cut the handbag valued five hundred naira (N500.00), property of one Prince Chukwu ‘f’ and thereby committed an offence punishable under Section 451(1), (b) of the Criminal Code, Laws of Rivers State of Nigeria, 1999”.
The prosecuting officer, Insp Wilsom Isaiah, represents the Rivers State Police Command as the case is between the Commissioner of Police in the state and Telema Jonny with the charge number PMC/1917c/ 2021.
The case was adjourned to 14 and 18 of January next year as the defendant was granted bail.
