…Calls For Revisitation Of Gender Bills
Christian Women group under the aegis of Women Wing of Christian Association of Nigeria (WOWICAN) Rivers State chapter, has decried the rejection of the gender equality bill by the National Assembly recently, during its constitutional amendment exercise and indeed the discrimination against women.
Speaking with newsmen in Port Harcourt during its awareness campaign as they celebrate this year’s International Women Day, WOWICAN secretary, Senior Mother Josephine Adaobi Ibrah said the importance of women in the world cannot be overemphasized in all sectors, hence the reason for them to be given equal opportunity to excel.
“As mothers, wives and last born in the creation, women have a unique position and assignment to dispense.
“Anything they touch is unique both in the churches, the communities and even in politics,” she said.
She lamented that despite their obvious advantages, the women are being sidelined in every spheres of lives and pleaded for the revisitation of the gender related bill at the National Assembly.
Mrs. Ibrah however expressed happiness that with time, the trend will be changed.
Asked whether the women folk are ready to support their own especially in aspiration for political positions, she answered in affirmative, “With the awareness being created now, it is obvious that we are ready to support our own in politics to make a difference”.
Also speaking, TEKAN/ECWA women leader, Mrs. Lilian Oghuvbu pointed out that without the women, nothing would work in every sector of the economy as they are peculiar species.
“It is the women who makes the house into a conducive home for all to thrive likewise in the churches, they have soft spot for God no wonder they are in majority in the service of God”.
She made it clear that when the Nigerian leaders start considering their female folks in whatever they do and give the women a chance, the situation in the country will normalized. Presenting a talk to the women organization at the Corpus Christi Catholic Church, Port Harcourt, the Organizing Committee Chairperson, Mrs. Nmecha Ifekwe Kanu deliberated on the topic “faith based approach to gender based violence”.
She explained that most of the causes of gender based violence could be traced to traditional beliefs, ignorance, faithlessness and having trust in human being instead of God can be dealt with through faith.
The resource person disclosed further that with faith in God gender based violence in the families can be tackled by applying the word of God.
Quoting profusely from the bible, she said that by applying the word of God in every situation one finds him/herself solution will be achieved faster.
Mrs. Kanu equally lectured that with Christians meditating frequently on the word of God, the situation will change.
“Be willing to hear the word of God regularly and apply same in your every day challenges in one’s life,” she said.
