Police Poised To Arrest Vigilantees Carrying Arms In Rivers

Tough times await members of vigilante bearing arms in Port Harcourt and Rivers in general as the Commissioner of Police, CP Effiong Okon has stressed they are not licensed to carry guns.

The disclosure by the Rivers Police boss came amid rumours  of approval of use of guns by vigilantees in Port Harcourt by the Police.

In a statement on Monday by the spokesperson for the Rivers State Police Command, SP Grace Iringe Koko, CP Okon has  directed the Divisional Police Officers(DPOs) in all the  jurisdictions to arrest anyone seen with arms anywhere in the state.

The Police in the statement maintained that vigilante groups do not also have powers to detain suspects or run detention facility.

Investigation by our reporter showed that some members of vigilante groups were carrying pump action riffles and locally made guns in Port Harcourt particularly in Diobu with claims that they have been licensed to bear arms.
