Okrika Chiefs Assembly Reads Riot Act

Severe penalties await any Okrika born politician who attempts to breach the peace or threatens the smooth running of the March 9 Governorship and State Assembly elections in the Okrika Local Government area, of Rivers state.

This was part of resolutions reached at a crucial community meeting held at the Chiefs Unity Hall, Okrika, last Saturday.

Convoked at the instance of the area’s Council of Traditional Rulers, the meeting was attended by War Canoe Chiefs, political party leaders, National and State Assembly contestants, representatives of women and youth groups and heads of Community Development Committees, CDCs

Assembly elections of Feb 23, which resulted in the disenfranchisement of many and non declaration of Okrika votes and warned politicians against any repeat or be dealt with according to Okrika Native Law and custom.

The meeting directed War Canoe Chiefs to warn their subjects against ballot box snatching and other antisocial behaviours before, during or after the elections or risk being held accountable for such electoral Malfeasance of their subjects.

The people described as provocative and grossly unjust, last week’s restrictions of movement into and from Okrika, as early as 3pm on Friday, instead of the earlier stipulated 12mid night and advised the various Security Agencies to be more professional in their dealings with the people and handling of electoral issues. It said, Okrika has, in the past five years, remained the most peaceful local government area in Rivers State and deserved a better deal.

The meeting finally agreed that a Peace Pact, underscoring all the resolutions reached at the forum, be signed by Contestants, Political Party Leaders and heads of the Central CDC, before the ODCC on Tuesday, March 5,2019.

Some dignitaries at the meeting were the member House of Representatives, representing Okrika/Ogu/Bolo, Rt Hon. Bright Gogo, top APC chieftain and former Health Commissioner, Dr. Tamunoiyoriari Parker, State PDP Secretary Hon Sam Okpoko, Chairman Okrika Local Government Council, Chief (Hon) Philemon Kingoli and State Assembly contestant, Hon (Mrs) Linda Somiari-Stewart among others.
