Rivers Assembly Suspends Deliberations In Honour Of Election Victims

The Rivers State House of Assembly reconvened today Friday 5th April 2019. However, following a motion moved by the Majority Leader- Hon. Martin Chike Amaewhule and seconded by the Minority Leader- Hon Benibo Fredrick Anabraba, the House suspended its sitting and deferred all matters on the Order Paper to another legislative day. 

Hon. Amaewhule urged the House to so suspend deliberations as a mark of respect for those who died during the Presidential and National Assembly elections as well as the Governorship and States House of Assembly Elections in Rivers State while trying to exercise their franchise or defend Nigeria’s nascent democracy. A moment of Silence was observed by the lawmakers while they prayed for God’s acceptance of their souls in his bossom. 

He further called on security agencies to be professional in the discharge of their duties and positively support INEC in line with the Constitution and Electoral Act in the forthcoming April 13th, 2019 supplementary elections for the remaining constituencies in the state.

The House had earlier congratulated His Excellency, the Governor for his re- election and Hon. members who were victorious at the polls. 

The House was adjourned to Tuesday 9th April, 2019 at 10am.
