The Medical Women Association (MWAN), Rivers state chapter has enjoined people to embark on healthy lifestyle and early screening in order to reduce the number of cancer related deaths.
The president of the association, Dr Vetty Agala said this during the association’s visits to cancer patients in River State University Teaching Hospital and University of Port-Harcourt Teaching Hospital as part of the association’s activities to commemorate this year’s World Cancer Day.
Presenting some gift items to the cancer patients in the hospitals she said as part of the association’s social cooperate responsibility MWAN has paid for 150 women to be screened for breast cancer adding that the association had earlier screened 100 women and girls for cervical cancer.
Some of the cancer patients who spoke to our correspondent thanked MWAN for taking responsibility of their treatments, show of love and for the gifts presented to them.
Meanwhile, the National President of Nigerian Medical Association of Nigeria (NMA) Dr Francis Faduyile has disclosed an estimated 115,980 new case of cancer and an estimated 70, 327 cancer related deaths in 2018.
In a statement signed by the chairman of Rivers state chapter of NMA Dr Obelebra Adebiyi, said the NMA President called on Nigeria to go for early detection, diagnosis and treatment so as to drastically reduce the cancer related deaths in the country.
He pointed out that cancer can be prevented through appropriate lowcost screening modality.
