Group Commends Rivers CP For Cautioning Vigilantes On Rights Abuses
Civil-Military Police and Paramilitary Relations (CIMPARR-NIGERIA) has commended the Commissioner of Police Rivers State, CP Nwonyi Emeka for warning vigilance group members against illegal detention, torture of arrested persons.
The group’s Coordinator in Rivers State, Green Isaac in an interview with our reporter noted that it was very important that CP Emeka has taken a stance against illegal detention and torture of arrested persons by vigilance group members.
He said such violation of rights of individuals by vigilantes are not only illegal but also inhumane and violate the rights of persons.
“It’s important for law enforcement officials to uphold the rule of law and ensure that all individuals are treated fairly and with dignity”.
Mr Isaac stated that by speaking out against human rights abuses by vigilantes, the Commissioner of Police has sent a clear message that such actions will not be tolerated in Rivers State.
In his contribution, the Chairman of Port Harcourt Local Government Area, Allwell Ihunda noted that the problem of chieftaincy tussle was a major catalyst for insecurity in the LGA.
He said “Some Paramount rulers want Youth and CDC Chairmen they will control.
Some of the Paramount rulers do not comply with rules governing selection of CDC and Youth leaders.
Mr Ihunda also lamented that many Police patrol vehicles in stations in the LGAs are not in order. He said they (Police) push it before it will start moving.
In his contribution, the Chairman of Ikwerre LGA, Samuel Wanosike lamented the activities of herders who came with AK47 riffle, to abduct an Ubima indigene and took him into the forest. Mr Wanosike revealed that the native was rescued by combined efforts of the DPO, Area commander, local Vigilance group who went into the bush.
The Ikwerre LGA Chairman pleaded with Rivers Police boss to protect the LGA from attacks by herders who had earlier killed a Vigilante leader and a senior Police officer in the area some months ago.
In his Contribution, the LGA Chairman of Etche Obinna Anyawu lamented activities of Kidnappers and suspected ritualists in Igbo Etche. He called on CP Emeka to encourage his officers to restore check points at entry and exit points to Igbo Etche.
