KenPoly Students Flee Hostels Over Robbery  Attacks

Reports reaching this publications indicates that some students of Ken Saro Wiwa Polythenics in Bori , Khana local Government area Rivers State, are  fleeing  from their out-campus hostel over incessant attack by armed robbery.

A student of the institution who preferred to remain anonymous explained to this medium that the incident occurs on weekly basis with the hoodlums operating unchallenged for hours without security intervention.

He   told our reporter that five student lodges in an area known as ‘back of school’ which is close to the institution was robbed in the latest incident which occurred last week.

Our source explained that the robbers usually cart away money, laptops, handset, plasma television, as well as food stuff while male students who do not have money are injured by the robbers.

The source also revealed that the robbers in most case rape the female students. He alleged that 25-30 female students have been raped in the past months.

According to the student, the hoodlums in the  robbery incident  last week operated from 2am to 5am unhindered despite calls to security agencies. He accused the Police and other security agencies of failing to live up to their responsibility of protecting lives and property while urging the Rivers State Government to come to their aid.

Some of the student told this publication that the most   disturbing aspect is that the hoodlums after the robbery operation will promise to come back on a later day and they will keep to their promise by invading the lodge again.

The students noted that after classes they no longer go back to their lodge to sleep but instead pass the night in houses of  natives of the community . They stated that the development has affected them academically as they can hardly settle down to read.

The speaker of Student Union Government (SUG) in the institution, Comrade Simeon Bayonne confirmed the incident describing it as disheartening.

Checks by National Network show that the lodges are owned by individuals who collect yearly rent from the students. The Investigations also shows that no security is attached to the lodge housing both female and male students as is the case in some student lodge in some institutions in the state.

The incident has adversely affected the owners of the lodge as many students are packing out from the place.

Nnamdi Omoni spokesperson of Rivers State Police command did not pick several calls put across to him on the incident neither did he respond to text messages sent by our reporter which from network response has been delivered to his mobile phone.
