Rivers PASAN Protests Non Implementation Of  Financial Autonomy

…Joins Counterparts  In Nationwide Strike

The Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria, (PASAN) Rivers State chapter has blocked the entrance of the State House of Assembly in protest of the non implementation of financial autonomy by state legislatures.

They have also joined their counterparts in the 36 states of the federation including FCT to commence an indefinite strike action.

This action followed letters of ultimatum on the non implementation of financial autonomy act and presidential order 10.

The National President of PASAN, Usman Mohammed explained that PASAN decided to embark on the strike after series of warnings have been given including 21 days, 14 days, and 7 days ultimatum.

The National President who was represented by the Zonal Vice President South South Mr Luise Okeleke said all  Houses of Assembly will remain closed until section 121, sub section 3 of the Constitution of the Federal Repubic of Nigeria is implemented.

Also speaking, the Chairman, Rivers State chapter of PASAN Mrs Regina  Otuene said their members are asking for the implementation of the legislative autonomy as enshrined in the Constitution.

She said if the legislature who is the engine room of the Constitution is neglected there will be no hope for the common man.

On her part, the  chairman Nigeria Labour Congress , Rivers State Chapter, Mrs Beatrice Itubo who spoke in solidarity with PASAN assured them of the support of NLC and advised them to obey the rule of law as they strive to ensure that the right thing is done.

The protesters  who blocked the entrance of State Assembly had the following inscriptions on their placards: “No subjugation of the legislature”, “Constitution is supreme”, “legislative financial autonomy is a constitutional right” and “there is no democracy without the rule of law”, among others.
