Nigeria vs Algeria: Joseph Yobo reveals why Super Eagles lost 2-1 to Desert Foxes

Former Super Eagles captain, Joseph Yobo, has blamed Gernot Rohr’s men following their 2-1 defeat to Algeria at the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations, AFCON, semi-final on Sunday.

Algeria took the lead in the first half, thanks a William Troost-Ekong own goal.

The Super Eagles levelled in the second half, after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) decision, with Odion Ighalo stroking home the penalty.

With the match heading into extra time, Riyad Mahrez stepped up and spanked a free-kick past Daniel Akpeyi, to send his side into the final.

But Yobo blamed the Super Eagles for not getting the right organization during the match and allowing the Desert Foxes to have more possession of the ball.

“In general, we have to give Algeria the credit. They were more possessive of the ball,” Yobo told SuperSport.

“On the Super Eagles, the organization was not right. The back four needed to come closer and push the Algeria team to the side where they are uncomfortable.”

Nigeria face Tunisia in the third-place playoff on Wednesday, July 17.

Algeria will take on Senegal in the final on Friday, July 19.
